February 13, known as “Galentine’s Day” has transcended its TV beginnings and is fast becoming a holiday in its own right as a day for “ladies celebrating ladies”. In the spirit of the day, local business are stepping up to raise much needed funds for domestic violence survivors.
First mentioned on the television series Parks and Recreation (2009 – 2015) the day before Valentine’s Day offers the opportunity to show how much our girlfriends, mums, sisters, daughters, and colleagues are appreciated.
In Brisbane, local businesses are invoking the new tradition to help Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ), which provides free legal advice and social work help to women who have experienced domestic violence.
Though the Service was able to assist almost 16,000 women last financial year, almost half of all calls to their State-wide Legal Advice Helpline went unanswered due to resource constraints, with the busiest day in the service’s history taking place in January 2019 .
In the spirit of Galentines, Lillipollen Florist, New Farm are donating $10 from the sale of their special Gal-entines Day Bouquets to support WLSQ. The bouquets, perfect for spoiling your gal pals, are created in your choice of “Soft & Pretty” or “Bold & Bright” and contain a seasons-best selection of beautiful spray-roses chosen fresh from market by the talented Lillipollen team.
WLSQ Fundraising Manager, Natalie Davidson is thankful for the kindness of business like Lillipollen.
“Their support means so much. Funds raised through Galentines Day initiatives like this are just vital to our service”,
“I strongly encourage everyone to treat their gal pals this Galentines Day. Each bouquet sold means we’re able to provide life changing advice to more women and their children living with domestic violence”.
