WLSQ Establishes First Nations Advisory Group

In October 2024, Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) proudly established a First Nations Advisory Group of six respected First Nations women living in Queensland. Each member brings diverse expertise across governance, media, community facilitation, child protection, social work, and clinical counselling.

Earlier in the year, WLSQ committed to reconciliation by joining the Reconciliation Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) program. The WLSQ Reflect RAP is focused on fostering meaningful relationships through proactive actions, and serves as a foundation for future initiatives, addressing key issues such as race relations, equality, institutional integrity, unity, and historical acceptance. The establishment of a First Nations Advisory Group is in line with these actions.

The group’s purpose is to identify opportunities to build and strengthen sustainable relationships that cultivate mutual understanding and respect. The aim is to approach this process in a meaningful and impactful way, acknowledging that true reconciliation will not be without challenges.

As a Queensland-wide service, WLSQ strives to be accessible to all women across the state, prioritising services for the most vulnerable. In the 2023/24 period, 8% of WLSQ’s clients identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.  WLSQ remains committed to examining data and services to address any barriers that may exist for First Nations women choosing a service, while also respecting the role of specialist First Nations services.

WLSQ is excited to collaborate with the First Nations Advisory Group and the community to drive tangible change.

The 2024/2025 First Nations Advisory Committee Group members are:

  • Karina Hogan
  • Lucy Davis
  • Yarraga Weatherall
  • Tamara Creamer
  • Leisa Bennett
  • Kiona Turner
