We are seeking expressions of interest for the Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) First Nations Advisory Group.

About WLSQ

WLSQ provides legal assistance and other key support services to women in the areas of domestic and family violence, family law, child protection and sexual assault – counselling notes protect matters.

WLSQ is committed to the creation of a society in which every woman:

  • Is safe from violence
  • Is able to tell her story, have it heard and respected
  • Receives a fair and just outcome from legal and social welfare systems

About the opportunity

WLSQ is dedicated to creating a welcoming and culturally safe space for both the women we serve and our staff, grounded in genuine care, truth-telling, respect and understanding.

We recognise the importance of incorporating First Nations wisdom and knowledge into our work.

The First Nations Advisory Group provides strategic advice to WLSQ, based on the collective experience and knowledge of current and emerging realities, and needs in First Nations communities.

The group aims to promote First Nations collaboration in the development and implementation of WLSQ’s initiatives, programs and policies that may affect First Nations clients and staff.

It is expected that the group will meet at least three times per year and members will be renumerated.  These meetings can be in person or online and will be scheduled in advance in consultation with the advisory group.

The primary roles and responsibilities of the First Nations Advisory Group, include but are not limited to:

  • Providing advice and recommendations to WLSQ on matters relating to First Nation women’s legal rights and access to justice.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on WLSQ’s policies, programs, and initiatives to ensure they are culturally appropriate and responsive to First Nations women’s needs.
  • Advocating for systemic changes to address legal and social barriers faced by Indigenous women in accessing legal services and justice.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to WLSQ on providing a culturally safe and inviting environment for First Nations employees.

We invite expressions of interest from applicants that:

  • identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander,
  • have familiarity or lived experience with legal system responses to domestic and family violence, or demonstrated advocacy or engagement with those with lived experience of legal system responses to domestic and family violence.
  • Experience and expertise in working as part of a team in a culturally safe, trauma-informed, accessible and inclusive manner.
